help me understand the wd hitches!

OK...so I've got a 2001 SuperCrew w/ tow package, 5.4L, 4x2. tow rating I believe is at or just above 8000lbs for this truck. Of course with the tow package, I just got a class III hitch, rated at 5000lbs trailer weight/500 tongue weight.
If I were to replace the hitch with a class IV (7500-8000lbs trailer / 750-800lbs tongue - depending on source), could I theoretically, safely, tow 12,000lbs with a weight distributing hitch?

No. First of all, you cannot exceed the Gross Combined Vehicle Weight rating which is somewhere around 14,000 lbs for both truck and trailer.

Second, you are limited to a maximum tow weight of 8,000 lbs in the Supercrew with a load leveling hitch.

The primary reason for the increased tow weight with a load leveling hitch is that weight is taken off the hitch and distributed to the front wheels of the tow vehicle and the trailer wheels.

I replaced the OEM class III with a Putnam class IV which is rated for 8000# carrying. My truck is rated for 7800# and of course I'm, not exceeding that but at least the hitch is rated for the weight it is rated for now. With anything but my boat (7000# to 7400# or so) I'd use WD no matter what the ratings.
