Gas efficiency of 4.6 v 5.4 L

I tow a medium sized boat(3200 total) with my expedition which has a 4.6 L. I am looking to trade in expedition and may purchase a F 150. The salesman said that the 5.4 would have almost equal gas mileage as the 4.6 has. Is that true? It seems to pull fine on the expedition, but figured that the 5.4 would tow easier and thus save engine life. Just wanted to know if it was a gas hog compared to the 4.6? I would appreciate any input.

I pull a boat about that size and get 14mpg. I get 18.5 otherwise.

Larry-

If you want power to tow, buy the 5.4; the mileage is not much different.

Your salesman is correct. I had a 4.6, and now have a 5.4 Trucks were otherwise the same. I get better milage with the 5.4. No comparison towing. The 5.4 get better milage and tows better. The only con is the added purchase cost.

Same As Farmboy

I had a 98 4.6 then a 99 5.4, not much difference in gas mileage at all but the larger engine and increase gears (3.55 to 3.73) made a big difference in towing for me......
