Blue Towing Wire
No one in the electrical forum seemed to have an answer for this questions. Thought you guys in the towing forums might know..
I have a 97 F-150 extended Cab.
On the inside brake trailer harness there is a blue wire that I thought went
directly back to the 7 way jack. However there is a slight voltage
(fluctuates around 1v). I was hoping to use this with a switch and send the
power from the red wire back to the blue brake wire on the trailer harness.
Should I be doing this? Where does the voltage come from on the blue wire?
I am hoping to put some lights on the back of my truck and this would be a
great way to turn them off and on without having to run more wires. Also
the red on the trailer brake power is hot all the time where the aux charge
power on the rear is only on when the key is on. If I can use the trailer
brake power then I can have it on without the extra drain of the
accessories.
Thanks!

Not sure if it is the same on your '97, but the blue wire on my 2000 F-150 Lariat is used to chage a battery in a towed vehicle.
Installed a relay that came with the tow package from Ford to make the wire hot. It measures 12VDC at the connector when the engine in running.

I have a blue wire that goes into the trailer wiring harness inside the cab. It is supposed to control the brakes on the trailer.
I thought it went direclty back to the 7 way connector. I was going to use it so I could "switch" the power from the cab.

The blue wire in the 7-way is to operate the trailer brakes,
it is not a battery charge wire for the trailer. there shouldn't be any voltage at the blue wire unless you have a brake control installed, which i guess you don't. you probably could do what you are saying. But don't take my word on it, as i could be wrong
