Towing 3:31 / 5.0?

Brand new to the forum & hoping for some input?

I'm looking at a new 2016 F150 XLT with a 301A Option package. It has a 5.0 with 3:31's straight axle. I'd like to get into RV'ing and was looking at a trailer at 5000 lb or lighter, definitely nothing over 5000. The truck is a decent deal, on lot left-over obviously. Will it handle the trailer suitably or should I bite the bullet and pay several 1000 more and order something with 3:55's? Will the 5.0 make a difference as opposed to the 2.7 or 3.5? I have to decide fairly quickly if this truck will work for me before its gone.

Thanks!!

I don't tow a lot. I do have a '15 with 5.0 and supercab short bed 4x4 with 3.31 gears.
It towed a 5K load fine up hill both ways. When I had to lift, I was able to get back into it unlike a 4.6l w/3.55's I had.
I keep seeing deals too, and then it seems I see one better. Good luck with your search.

I have a EB and it tows like a banshee with 3:31 gears. Stay under 7,500 lbs. you will be fine. Remember to use Tow/Haul when doing it.

I've towed with my 2014 5.0 3.31

You'll be just fine just make sure you're looking at payload vs tongue weight and make sure you keep it safe and legal

Thx all...I ended up going with another truck with a 5.0 & 3.55's. It had the 302A package instead of the 301A and was only an extra 1k. I did look at the payload. It has the 7050# GVR and a payload of right around 2050 lbs. I dont plan on pulling anything much more than 5k so even with 15% tongue weight that still leaves me 1300 lbs for me, the Mrs and gear. Thanks again, I'm sure I'll have more questions...

5000 lb is nothing for that setup. Just check the door jamb and get your GCWR to make sure you are going to be within spec and legal (if you care).

I think the 3.5 naturally aspirated V6 will pull that 5k

Worst case scenario down the road, weight goes up or you put big heavy tires on and you change the rear end to a 4.10/4.30.

Let us know what you do

I'm actually running the 5.0 V8 with 3.55 gears.

Great! You'll have plenty of towing ability. Enjoy the new ride!
