Bottom line - too much trailer for that truck.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a web site that you plug in your truck's payload capacity, tire size/ply rating, GVWR, bed size, and whether you were 5th wheeling or tag along, and probably some other data and have it spit out the max pin weight and trailer weight of the trailer to buy.

Or is that what you do???
I am the shop foreman and senior tech for a medium sized RV dealership. I have been a senior tech for 2 of the top 10 dealers in the country in the past. Prior to that I spent nearly 20 years in heavy trucks as a Master Mechanic and Fabricator. There are lots of numbers and formulas I can use but as a rule of thumb my point is if it has 2 5000 lb axles your not gonna tow it with a 1/2 ton truck. My boat is 4800 trailer is 1800 and it nearly kills my 09 F 150 to tow it why because the boat is full of gas water fishing gear beer safety equipment ect. Now I add 4 fat guys and more stuff in the truck and we are just below my max towing actually weighed it and we were at 8800 lbs of my 9300 capacity but my rear axle was within 50 lbs of max. Trailer is rated for 10k and has brakes so it does not even feel the load. Way more to it than just empty numbers. My second rule of thumb is if the empty trailer outweighs the tow vehicle your not gonna have a fun trip. But that is just my opinion I have not seen this setup on a scale so all I can do is comment.

Hello Folks,

Back again. I did purchase the Jayco as planned and drove it home with no problems. Had a full tank of propane tanks as well.

After everyone telling me how overweight I would be; today traded in the 2011 Ford F150 V8 for a 2013 Eco boost Larient 4x4 which brings my maximum trailer weight ratings up an additional 2,000 lbs to 9700 lbs as opposed to the 7700 for the 2011 V8. Having the fifth wheel installed tomorrow.

The 16k sliding fifth wheel worked fine as well but bought a wedge in order to use the Reese revolution with it but was told to leave the 5th wheel to the haul position at all times when using the Reese Revolution.

But I'm still gonna use paper plates, knives, forks n spoons and not gonna haul water but dump the Black, white, grey tanks before leaving the campsite.

Wednesday will be our first camping trip thru the weekend. Looking forward to it.

Truck pulls like a work horse up hills and doesn't stop pulling. It's also equipped with the heavy duty tow package and does not sit in the air like the other truck when I hook up the trailer, sits level. Im pleased. Happy trails!

F250 burns fuel. The Eco boost has twin turbo but a v6 and a work horse. It's unbelievable how a v6 outdoes the v8 in categories. Truc.k rides like a Cadillac with trailer hooked to it as opposed to the other truck. I'm happy now!

Just because the engine can pull the weight does not mean the truck can safely handle it.

With the tow package the new truck sits level and pulls up hills in access of 70 mph. Pulls much better than the other truck hands down! First camping trip went well last week. Pin weight is 2,000 pounds. We packed less than 200 lbs to include cloths, tools and food for 4 days. No scales were in the area but looking at how the truck pulls and sits as opposed to the V8 5.0. I think I am underweight by at least 1500-1700 ills. Just my guesstimate.

I have over 3 million miles of safe driving - driving tractor trailers for the USArmy as well as independently for contractors with several safe driving awards. I can tell when I am overweight by the way the truck handles the load. With the other truck; I was surely overweight. The new truck handles the trailer as if it were a u haul trailer. A big difference in steering as well as how it handles when in rough road. I'm not new to driving heavy equipment but new when it comes to hauling a trailer with a half ton truck which I'm finding is very similar in many ways just smaller units.

Safety is a big issue with me especially if others are riding with me. We won't really know if I am overweight which i believe I'm not until I hit the scales. However, my best judgement tells me that my new investment does the job significantly without a doubt. Total weight with two people food, tools and cloths guesstimated a total of 750-800 pounds. The trailer with generator and fuel and full propane tanks is 7745 lbs, however, I do not have a generator which might knock me down to 7500 lbs guesstimate plus 800 pounds total 8300 lbs. The owners manuel for the new truck says 9300 pounds. Ford f150 commercials for the Eco boost pulls 11,000 lbs up hills for hours during test.

Oh! Burnt a little less than a 1/4 tank of fuel with the trailer 150 miles.

If it has a pin weight of 2000lbs, you are overweight before you add the hitch or any people in the vehicle. With everything you are over, probably by at least 500lbs. Even with the 8200lb GVWR, at best your payload is 2300lbs. Also your tires are probably p series tires, which means when loaded at max, and not over, they are maxed out.

You have totally ignored everything others and your owners manual states, in that the max tow rating is meaningless, as you will be well over other ratings long before you reach max tow rating. My guess is that someone else did the loading of your vehicles in the past, or you would have been stopped at every weigh station for being overloaded.
