I don't think they're surge brakes. All I know is they look like conventional drum brakes. On the subject of brake controllers, do I just plug whatever controller I get into the port under my dash and suddenly the trailer brakes work?

Pretty much, but the relays and fuses have to be installed.

They came with the truck, but in a bag in the glove box.

I'm really surprised the dealer you bought the trailer from didn't discuss brakes with you.

I assume you have a 7 pin connector in the back?

Towing package came with 4 & 7 pin connectors & I am equally surprised he didn't discuss brakes with me. It was on my mental list of questions to ask but I forgot. I'll check my glovebox when I get home. I vaguely remember something in a bag when I first brought the truck home.

It was a Shamrock 21ss. It weighed around 5,600lbs loaded.

Well, a brake controller is definitely going to be installed before the next time I tow the camper. The best one I've been able to find so far is the one "glc" attached a link to on this thread. For around $170, I can even get a second mounting bracket & connector for my wife's Expedition. I appreciate everyone's input and advice.

So how's it going with the towing? Did you get the controller installed?

I bought a second bracket and F-150 and Expedition specific pigtails to have both trucks. I've towed the camper from the storage lot a couple of times and it definitely works. We're taking our first camping trip tomorrow to a campground/resort for the weekend (about an hour and a half away) so we'll see.......

how did the trip go? I have been setting up to tow my new 22 foot hybrid trailer. about 5000lbs total realistically. I got 8.5 hauling up the hills to the AZ mountians and 11mpg over all on the trip with the route back. didnt let it get by easy either, held 55 mph even on the longest grades both ways. I was happy with the trucks performance. 3.55 LS rear, Edge on level 2, crew cab with 3 adults and a kid, the bed loaded with the generator and other stuff too. My trans temps hit 225 at one point but held in the 180's on level or downhill grades, not all that different from stop and go in the phoenix heat.

San Diego next.... might do the O2 sensors first as over all city/highway MPG's arnt the best.....

I haul a 28' 5ver with my F150, dry weight is just under 6000lbs. I average 10-11mpg cruising at 55-60 mph. 5.4L 4x4 3.55
