A 3/4 ton truck will ALWAYS tow better than a 1/2 ton truck. That does NOT account for engine power though, I'm talking about physical strength and stability. Your 5.4 will run circles around an old GM 5.7. I have a friend with a very similar newer truck - but it has a 8.1 gas hog - and they tow a 41 foot toyhauler with it. It's WAY over limits but it does a decent job - and gets a whole 6 mpg. They bought the toyhauler after they bought the truck, and when it's paid off they are getting a F-450.

See if your neighbor will let you hook your trailer up and go drive it.
