I have a 1997 F150 XLT automatic. I am trying to figure out how much of a travel trailer I could pull safely. I have the owners manual but I am confused. How do I know if I have the 3.08 or the 3.55 gear ratio?

 

Whats the axle code on your drivers door?

 

What is your definition of 'safely'? You don't give a whole lot of info?

Is it just looking at the tow ratings and finding a trailer that fits that weight?

Is it knowing how to tow a trailer and how it changes most, if not all of the usual driving characteristics of the truck?

Is it staying within the trucks other weight ratings and knowing it's capabilities?

Standard cab or supercab? Short or long bed? 2wd or 4wd? 4.2, 4.6, or 5.4? What are the trans and axle codes off the door jamb sticker?

 

I believe I found the info I need, glc, I have a 4.6L supercab, with a 19 rear axle rating, according to my manual this gives me a 6600 trailer weight capacity.

 

I think you'll find something that weighs closer to 4000 pounds dry acceptable from a performance standpoint. It wil be closer to 5000 pounds loaded for a camping trip. I tow about 6500 pounds with the 5.4L/3.73 gears and find it acceptable, but often wanting more power.
