Question Wiring a Brake Controller

I'm getting ready to install a Brake Controller on my 2001 F-150. By chance did Ford leave any pigtails under the dash for these installations? By chance does Ford have the wiring schematic to install one of these. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

If you have factory tow package, there is a pigtail under the dash located under the storage bin to the right of the steering wheel.

Cool, thanks. Now "Summit" has a Hoppy's controller. Is it worth a ****? Jeg's has something also, but I don't have their catalog in front of me.

I have a Warner brake control on my 2001
Super Crew. I tow a 26ft Airstream, I have
had a number of brake controllers over the years and I find this Warner the best I have ever had.

If you got the truck new it should come with a little package. Mine had the pigtails that you connect to your controller and it will plug in to the connector under the dash. It also had the wiring diagrams and the relays and instructions on how to install them. Make sure you have the relays or that the dealer already put those in.

You do not want to cheap out on a brake controller - there was a post here a while ago about what brands people like and dislike.

I don't know about Warner but Tekonsha has a very good reputation. The important thing is to get a controller that has the inertial control (a little pendulum that controls the braking power).

Also, if you didn't get the little bag of parts (I didn't) give the dealer hell. I got mine that way. If you don't install the relays, your trailer charge and backup lights won't work.

Cool

I got that bag of stuff in the glove compartment. I knew it was for wiring the truck to the trailer, but didn't have a clue about the use of those relays. Thanks for all your help(s). I believe I've got a pretty good handle on most of the items now.

Thumbs up

which brake controler did you get??? I've got the Draw-Tite Activator II and I know I had a time figuring out which wire matched up with which one from the truck. If you run into this problem too, then post back and I'll give you the pattern colors of how mine worked.

I'm looking at a Hoppy's inertia style controller from Summit. If I can't seem to figure out the wiring I'll be sure to give you a hoot Tina. Mailing sounds a lot easier then trying to reinvent the wheel. Thanks

I just got a Draw-Tite Activator II brake controller. I've got a 98' F150, 5.4L, tow package, so I have the brake controller connector under the dash. Can anybody please tell me how to hook this thing up?? The Activator has 5 wires and my truck connector has 4. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've got that same brake and I've got 4 wires on the brake controler and 5 on my truck.
Match them up this way:
truck-------------brake
white-------------white, ground
Dk blue-----------Dk blue, output
Lt green----------red, brake light
Red---------------black, 12v power
Brown-------------nothing, tape the end of the wire (this is for a light on the controler)

Thanks Tina. I had the number of wires switched in my original post...it is 4 on the controller, 5 on the truck. I'll be hooking it up today.
