Question 4.2 w/ 3:08 gearing 5spd

Anyone have experience with towing with the 3:08 gearing. I am thinking of getting a 16' trailer and am wondering if I need (should) have the gears switched to 3:55

Page 156 of the Y2K owner's manual (http://www.net-link.net/~n8jg/F-150/2000%20F-150%20Owner's%20Manual.pdf) lists 2,000 pound max capacity for a 4.2L manual with 3.08:1 axle.
