Post 12V Fan on existing Auxiliary Tranny Cooler

My latest project is to get some cooling onto the Auxiliary tranny cooler in my F250 SD for those occasions when I am towing in heavy stop and go traffic.

Many have added an entire unit with another tranny cooler and fans on it. But few, if any, have tried just the fan alone. In some cases they have tried to get a fan behind there but were unsuccesfull in getting enough room to do it. I have almost 5 inches behind mine and between it and the Radiator. It has been reported not to work trying to pull or push through another radiator and the only possile way it will work is if the fan is mounted directly on the cooler. Just what I am going to do!

I have not been seeing excessive temperatures (170) but have noticed I see just as high in hot weather "stop and go" as when I am pulling up the meanest baddest hills around here. So it got me to thinking. What if I just put some more air through what I've got and see what that does?

So heres what I am going to try: I got one 8 inch Perma-Cool fan (800 CFM)that is only 2 1/4 inches thick. I am not sure that a 10 inch unit wouldn't work but I wanted to be sure. This will cover almost half the surface of my tranny cooler. And allow enough room for another one as well if I need to. I am wiring it into a 30 amp rocker switch in the dash. Manual control for now. Maybe add a second one of these fans and a relay and temp sensor later. Will monitor temps and see if it gives me mesureable drop. If not add the second unit etc.

Will post results. The fan is here but the switch is shipping from another location.

Here is info on the fan: http://www.perma-cool.com/Catalog/Cat_page18.html

Sounds like a great idea cphilip. Let us know how it works. I'm considering this option as well. I've just installed another aux cooler, but if that doesn't keep things cool enough, I may opt for a fan like yours. I also saw some at Summit's site. http://www.summitracing.com/

Will do F250NUT. Waiting on the switch now. Summit is where I got my Perma-Cool by the way.

Going OK so far. Almost finished. Many snags to work out as I went along and a few compromises to make but I am almost there. Will post details after I finish. Here are the pictures of the progress so far.
