Rookie Towing Question

I have a 2007 SCREW 4X2 with factory tow package. I have 3.55 gearing, 3" Autospring leveling kit, Add a leaf in the rear. 33" tires. I am looking to pull a 25' trailer W/ rear slide out. Weight is 6,000 lbs dry. I know I will need a brake controller.

What I need information on is:

Sway Bars?

What Hitch set up?

Regear?

I know I will need a brake controller looking at P3 Good choice? Also what actual wiring is needed if I buy P3 with wiring harness?

I am looking for information from your guys experience.

Thanks for the help, Chris

6000 pounds dry is a little more than I like for half tons. It will probably be closer to 7000 pounds ready to camp with 1000 pounds of tongue weight. 25' and 6k pounds is not very light. My 28' box (32' tongue to bumper) is listed at 5180, although it was almost 5600 pounds as delivered).

Sway - YES!

Equal-i-zer or Reese Straight line 1000-1200 pound bars, which includes sway control.

Regear - I would, to 4.11 or 4.56 if you don't put a lot of miles non-towing on it. Cheap for 2WD, $500 installed.

Prodigy, P2, P3 all good. If you get the Ford specific harness, literally plug and play. There is a connector under the the dash and the one on the controller. Just need to make sure the two relays are installed for the trailer brakes and 12v for charging while in run.

A little updated information: Trailer is actually 5,200 dry and truck is a daily driver.

I will check out hitch set up you recommend, go with P3 and regear to 4.10. Now to find a good local gear house to do rear end.

Thanks again

If it's a 4.6, regear to 4.56.

It's a 5.4 and is a daily driver non towing.

Where is best place to buy hitch/controller?

Work a deal with the selling dealer if buying from one. Usually not much more and they will install it and set it up. Don't get friction sway for $100 less. My Reese 1200 Trunnion bar setup was $650 vs. about $550 for all parts through Internet. If buying used, RVWholesalers has the Equal-i-zer for about the best price for the Equalizer.

Prodigy 90185 should be $110 or less shipped with vehicle specific harness.

Well tomorrow is the day I pick up a 28' TT (5,100 dry GVWR 7,000). Thanks to this forum I have installed 4.10, P3, **** Towing mirrors, loaded my Gryphon towing tune and will be installing an Equalizer 4 point when picking up. Should be ready thanks to this forum and all the great support. Thanks and I will report after hitting the road.
