Ive got 5 star working on my new custom tow tune as I write this.Gave him my info on tow experience gona move shift points and tp around I think we can make it better.I think if he makes it shift to od later and back to 3rd sooner I can drive the truck with od on and get better mpgs because the truck will pull it on level ground just need quicker back shift for hills.

When I trailer my Mustang (car and trailer roughly 4,500 lbs) I get 12.5 to 13 mpg. When I pull my TT (8,500 lbs roughly) I get about 10 - 11 mpg..

Bone stock 05 Super cab Lariat.

I have a 24 ft enclosed with race car and get just below this. 9 to 10 MPG. But it is like pulling a box. It really catches the wind. I have made a few changes though. I have the 4.11 gears and a level 2 edge. I hate to think what it would be without those. If I got 13 mpg I believe I would soil myself.

I'd just leave OD off and take the 2500 to 2700 rpm - it will run all day at those rpm's and be nearer the torque peak than in OD - and be a lot easier on your tranny.

I pull a 4000 lb or so travel trailer with the overdrive OFF. I have run for 7 hours up and over the sierras and across the high Nevada desert at 2400 rpms around 63 mph. Never had a problem. I use the truck for towing mostly and now have 50,000 miles on the truck and it still runs so quiet you can barely hear it at idle.. Great towing truck. 11 to 13 mpg depending on the amount of Mountains we cross.

I just towed the first time in our "new to us" stock 02 FX4. Fairly flat here in NW FL down I-10 as we pulled a 3200lb 2-horse trailer at 70mph (OD off, no cruise). 11mpg heading east, 9mpg heading west... was lower than what i expected by 2-3mpg ut sounds typical based on above responses.

I get 11-12 around town, 15-16 on the highway. 13 towing sounds like a blessing to me.

I have Edge programmer (in trailer mode), stock tire size, 3.53 gears, 5.4L, 4WD Screw pulling 24' enclosed with about 2000 lb's between sand rail and stuff and get 17 mpg w/o cruise.
I found that if I feather the throttle with the o/d on it does better.

I get 14 to 15 MPG pulling a 2 PWC trailer. Weight is around 1800#, I think.
This is 65 MPH on CC, A/C on, and plenty of decent grades. I only use OD on level or downgrades. Any sign of uphill, I turn OD off. This is also summer temps going to Colorado River. Can be anywhere from 90 to 117 degrees.
Good luck.
