2004 XLT (new body style) towing question

I recently purchased this truck and am happy with it so far. Its my second F-150 and have few complainats so far.

This one didn't come with a tow package and I'm kicking myself. I'm in Victoria, British columbia and I just started calling around getting quotes for a hitch install with wiring and was quoted around $400. I also need electric brakes and was quoted an additional $400.

From reading some of the previous threads it looks like some vehicle come with everything ready and just require some minor installs.

I'm a rookie when it comes to hitches so if anyone could help me out and shed some light on this for me it would be great.

TT

Here is what you need for the hitch, very easy to put on. You just got to pick your truck.

And here is the brake controller I would get, plug and play

You can get the plug for the back of the truck at any parts store, the truck is pre wired for all this stuff.
Hope that helps?

You don't need to spend a whole lot of money to make your rig a tow vehicle.
Find some hitch receiver deals on-line or at a discount near you and put it on yourself. There are many kits that will be made to fit your truck. If you are handy with wrenches you won't have any problem.

The "7 wire" plug (as opposed to the 4 wire which is probably on your truck) is available from many places and will take some studying of the wire diagram and some work on the wiring. If you are not comfortable with it take it to a place that does this kind of thing and have them wire it for you. Shouldn't cost too much.

The extra transmission cooler may be the spendy part if you choose to go that route. I would try everything else and gage your tranny temps while towing before making the decision to add that part.

A Prodigy brake controller is needed for your truck if you tow a trailer with electric brakes... not all trailers have electric brakes so check this first. These brake controllers are fairly inexpensive and easy to install.

If you don't mind some DIY, the tasks are not difficult to accomplish.

go to ford and order the Seven pin wiring harness it cost about $140 US. it comes with the seven pin plug and a 4 pin plug which is plug and play takes about 10 min to install and the kit comes with the wiring harnes for under the dash that you wire to any brake controler that you buy. and it has the relay that you need to install for the whole system to work. The only thing that you will need is a way to mount the plugs, factory hitches have the bracket already welded to the hitch, but you can order a bracket that fits a 98-03 f150. I bought a putnam hitch for about $200 us and installed it myself in less than a half hour. with nothing but a ratchet and socket

Wow... I am in Kelowna BC. It cost around $200 for the hitch, about $120 for the wirring, and I put my own brake control in. It just plugs in under the dash.

yep theirs a plug in right beside the stearing colum below the kick panel if you order the wiring harness kit from ford it has a pig tail that wires into any brake controler that u buy and plugs right in. Plus the relay that you need to make the controls work with out it you wont have anything
