which is better?
Depends on where you are?? If you are stuck with only one wheel spinning, then an LS would be better... If you are just cruising on nice dry pavement, then an open diff is fine..
What's your main focus with your question?
IMO, it's always best to have something and not 'always' need it then to need something and not have it at all... An LS is a nice thing when needed.. Kinda like 4x4.. I don't need it but maybe once or twice a year, but it's nice to have when needed...

LSD is the way to go. Who doesn't want more traction, I think they should put LSD on all factory vehicles. Now a locker is a different story but and LSD is not always active, whenever the right tire loses traction the LSD senses this and engages. Glad my 08 had it stock but my 97 I had to install it and my 05 has crappy open diff.
Most people agree LSD is better than open differential. Open diff = 1 wheel drive, and it's the wheel with the least amount of traction that spins first and you are done. LSD helps both wheels on the axle to spin.
The one complaint about LSD is that some people have on RWD vehicles is that it tends to slide the back end around more than open diff that just spin one wheel. These people don't like or know how to control the rear end with the accelerator pedal, so they think LSD = bad.
My opinion is that LSD is the least expensive performance improving option you can buy. $300 for double the traction. The 5.4L is the second least expensive option as there no way to get that kind of power increases under 3000rpm for anything close to $600.

On the F-150 option sheet, there isn't a better bargain than Limited Slip.
The factory price is less than half what you pay aftermarket.
Never understood why Ford didn't gouge on this.
They certainly do on other Options, or bundle them so you buy five things you don't want to get the one thing you do.
good that it is a 4x4 maybe or is it not. i think maybe a new rearend is in the works, i get it used and got a real good deal so i jump on it maybe too fast.

There are times when 4WD can be used to help those with open diffs and times when it cannot. Certain drivers don't even notice like Mitch said or understand. There are a lot of open diff pickups out there, so don't feel bad about not having it. I assume you asked your orignal question with all else being equal when all else rarely is equal (price/availability as you mentioned).
