Towing Question

I am thinking of buying our first camper and don't know how it will tow with my F-150. The camper is 25' with a dry weight of 4,300 lbs. so I'm guessing loaded it will be over 5,000. My truck is a 2003 F-150, 5.4 engine with 3.55 limited slip. It has the tow package. I believe the max trailer weight for this truck is 7,500 lbs. Being new to this, can anyone tell me if this is an acceptable set-up?
Thanks

Yes. Get a weight distributing hitch with anti-sway and you will need a brake controller.

You will definitely notice a trailer of this size but your truck will handle it just fine. I pull a very similar weight TT. My trucks is equipped similarly to yours except I have 3.73's. Expect 9 to 11 mpg towing @ 60 to 65 mph. My cylinder head, engine coolant, and transmission temps are within 2 to 6 degrees of when I'm driving around empty. No sweat. Enjoy your new trailer.

What trailer

So what trailer are you looking at? Our is a Surveyor SV235RKS; 25.5 feet and 4,300 pound dry.

I have an 08 Screw with 4.6L and limited slip with the tow package. My TT is 4,100 dry but you can assume well over 5,000 loaded (closer to 6,000 really) and even more with full LP and storage tanks. I tow mine just fine, I have an Equalizer brand hitch which has sway control built in (highly recommended!) and a tekonsha prodigy controller. I will not win any races but I can tow comfortably at 100 KM/h at about 2,900 RPM with OD OFF. Your setup sounds pretty good, but check your axle ratio because mine is 3.73 and I understand that is what you get with the tow package.

Happy camping!

You'll be closer to 6000 pounds ready to travel. WD hitch, Prodigy brake controller, and towing mirrors! I don't know how many trucks I see pulling trailers that cannot see the vehicles behind them or even beside the traielr because of the narrow stock truck mirrors. How do they change lanes on the freeway? Not safely!

Check out this site for answers to your question of whether your truck can do it or not.

The safety margin field can be adjusted for more or less capacity.
