Reciever Hitch safety question...

My Friend has an '06 F250 Diesel 4x4 Supercrew Longbed with the tow package. He's going to be towing a 26' boat on a dual axle trailer(Disc brakes on BOTH axles on a surge brake), and a weight carrying hitch. The total trailer weight will be about 10k lbs.

Is the stock truck rated for this tow in factory form, or do we have to modify the receiver hitch to handle this load? The reason we're asking is because someone told him to go read the side of the receiver hitch and see what it said for weight limits, and the reciever said 6k lbs limit in one place, and 12k lbs limit in another place, and my boy just wants to have peace of mind that he is towing safely.

Thanks,

RRZNagas

I may be wrong but I believe that the 6k is max tongue weight and 12k is max load pull weight

Ya, no prob, my dads 350 dually v-10 pulled a 33ft offshore, full of gas with a tri axle Pacific trailer, through the Rocky's no less. This was a factory hitch, no w/d hitch or sway control and surge brakes. My boss' 250 pulled some stupid amount of weight with his diesel across the yard, 50k and he said it did no damage.

Nope, it's 6k standard and 12k with equalizer. You are within limits.

To the OP: If you can get the surge brake system changed over to a standard trailer brake system and get a controller, you will be much better off.

Usually they list the rating with and without a weight distributing hitch.

6K is w/o weight distributing hitch

12K with WD hitch.

There should also be a rating for max tongue weight but I gaurantee it is less than 6K lbs.
