Where to install the brake controller?
Where to install the brake controller?
I have the P3 and harness literally in hand... ready to install. I want to make it easy to reach but was hoping for a nicer look/low profile location on my 2007 F150. I am not finding a spot that I can easily reach. Any suggestions? If anyone has photos or links to photos that would be really nice. It kinda bugs me to drill holes in a truck with less then 500 miles on it.....
My very old F250 was easier, I could reach under the dash no problem, the dash on this seems to drop a lot lower.

On my 2007 Supercrew, I screwed the mounting saddle to the lower right dash panel just to the left of where the console meets the dash. It was very accessible, and easy to see there. Plenty of wire to connect up as well.
This is where I put mine. I like it here just fine. I am tall with long arms, so I can reach it. I squeze the tray of the cupholder when I slide it in. I dont have to do that, but it keeps it from hitting the controller it would only scratch it and I'm ****, so I do it. Its absolutely no effort to do so as the tray is lightly spring loaded and now its completely automatic for be to squeeze it before pushing it in.
If you have the flow through console, you'll have to find another spot.
I have the prodigy and I set it one time when I hook the trailer up and its good for the trip.

I have the FX4 and dual capts seats with floor shifter and I mounted mine right on the left of the steering wheel, on the angled piece of interior. I recommend either there or the right. It makes sense when you look down to mount it there or right of the steering wheel. Plus easy access for emergences.
I should have mentioned I have the 40/60 bench seat, automatic, 4wd so I have the shifter there.
Well, I don't have expecially long arms, but I think I can reach reasonably well that spot under the ashtray. I have the P3 that I am getting ready to install. I guess the question about the spot under the ashtray is did you drill holes in the side to get the wires through? What do you mean about the cupholder - it rubs against your brake controller? I guess I am **** too, that would bother me.
I also thought about under the dash like my old truck, but that is way down low. That seems to me a much harder reach. Maybe I am misjudging, but that is reaching straight down as in I would no longer be looking over the steering wheel. I guess I better check that out.
Do you really think 2 sided tape is strong enough? I hadn't thought about that installation option. It does give some choices about where to put it - as long as we can figure out how to get the wires there. It is too bad they didn't engineer a more practical spot for shorter armed people (as in I bet at least 50% of the people who drive horse trailers are women!)

I did drill holes for mounting and for the wire. Even if I removed the controller, I'd never see the holes without getting between the center seat/console and the dash. Plus if it was damaged, I could get another piece. I dont believe in double sided tape for something that uses vehicle inertia to regulate braking.
Edit: I was going to take some pictures, but it actually never touches. Its about 3/8's clearance as it pulls up and into the cupholder. I thought that it did touch. Thats what I get for thinking when I am not used to it.

The problem is that if you mount it in dash you can't get to the manual brake control lever on the bottom. I don't use the ashtray. If someone can think of a way of replacing the ashtray with the brake controller that would be an option.

ARGHHHHHH where's my friggen picture?!!!!! If it still doesn't show up then click on my gallery. I have mine installed on the RT hand side of the steering wheel. It works well and I can reach it easily.
drilling holes
If you are concerned about drilling holes in the brand new rig there is a way to lessen your concern. Mount the device on a small (easily) removeable panel (or box) and pick up a replacement panel, either at a dealer or a junk yard. Since the truck is brand new, the dealer may be the only choice there.
I also saw a controller mounted inside the console box of a 06 F150. The owner wanted it to be discrete when parked. He claimed to have left it inside the truck since 06, and he still had it. It might have been difficult while in use, but it was out of the way of thieves prying eyes.
Take Care!!
