I am going to be picking up some lava rocks for the front yard and was wondering if it was alright to have them fill the bed or if this would be to heavy and would be better off talking a trailer. Never really filled the back with much usually only gets filled with fishing or hunting gear. Mostly tow a trailer when I have to move stuff around but I think in this case it would be easier to fill the bed if it is safe to do so. I have a 6" fabtech lift with the dirtlogic shocks. I also have a skyjacker 1.5" aal and 4.88 gears if this helps.

Use a trailer and air the tires up.You didn't say how big a place you were covering with the rocks or how far you had too haul them.Do the rocks come in bags or they loose and have to be dumped into the bed.If you have a lot of rocks too unload a trailer would be easier then the back of your truck.If they are baged and on a pallet then go for it in the truck,but with the toolbox 1 pallet is all that will fit.

 

I have had over a ton of steel in the back of mine and it only put it down about about half way.

 

Well they said I would need a "yard" but I have no idea how much that is. The rocks will be loose. My buddy told me he filled his 03 like this before (pretty much to the top of the bed) but I wasnt sure if the lift would make a difference. I thought the skyjacker aal said it would let you handle a little more weight but wasnt sure if it was a fact or just a claim. I think its only about 7-10 miles I would be driving loaded.

Lava rock is really light stuff, When we did our drive way I was getting one scoop at a time. After the 4th one I told them I wanted two scoops this time "1/2 ranbow rock" With my little bed it was full all the way to the top. You will be fine.

 

Well there is no way a yard will fit in your truck. I had exactly 1/2 yard of topsoil in my '05 Screw and it was almost to the top of the side rails and was pretty much down on the bumpstops. Most good garden centers will only load 1/2 yard of anything into a half ton pickup.

A yard is 3x3x3 which is 27 cubic feet. Even being conservative, a 6.5 foot bed will hold almost 2 yards. 1.5x5x6.5 = 48.75 cubic feet.

I doubt lava rock will be any problem. I had 2 yards of wet bark mulch in my bed and it sagged a bit, but it was fine. Have you ever picked up lava rocks in your hands? That stuff is pretty light.

 

Yah, the rock is pretty light. Its just that I just lifted the truck a couple months ago and hadnt really had much weight in the back since. I just wanted to be sure. A buddy of mine from work loaded his truck down with I forgot what but when he unloaded his bed the back end never came back up. He had to get new springs. I dont know how much weight he had back there, or maybe because it was a dodge . I just wanted to be sure.

1 yard of wet pool sand weighed about 2500 pounds and it doesn't fill up the 5.5' supercrew bed. A 6.5' bed should be close to 2 yards to level the bed rails.

Lava rock is light, probably 1/3 the weight of sand/dirt. You'll be fine.

 

Let's just put it this way, if the parts you have in the truck are equal to or better than OEM, then you'll be fine.

 

I have the 5.5 ft bed and 1/2 yard pretty much filled it up. Now I realize that top soil is way heavier than lava rock so he should be ok as far as weight goes. He did not say whether he had the 5.5 or 6.5 bed.

 

I just assumed that the truck in his sig was the truck we were talking about based on what he said in his post.
