Question Will this work? (nubee here)

New to RVing. I have a question about towing capacity.
Current set up: 06 Screw 4x4
5.4 3v
3.55 LS (H9 axle code)
315/70r17 BFG ATs on 17x8 AR Crush wheels
Proposed Trailer: 07 Jayco Jay Flight 27BH
UVW 4890 lbs
Dry Hitch 630 lbs
GVWR 7500 lbs
Prodigy or P3 brake controller
Equalizer 4 point weight distribution / sway controll hitch

My truck came with 20" wheels which makes the maximum trailer weight 7700 lbs (per manual). The manual says 17" would be 8200 lbs. Will this combo work? How does current tire/wheel setup affect ratings?

Hey,

Awesome looking truck by the way!

Some people are gonna say no, some will say yes to your question. I say this will not be a problem. You won't set any speed records but I am sure you won't be trying to do that anyway. Good luck! Also, the H9 axle code if I am not mistaken is not LS. I am pretty sure that is what I have and I think it is 3.55 non-LS. I could be wrong though just might want to double check. Later

I say, "No. No."

The first 'No' is because I'm jealous.
The second 'No' is because it's Monday.

I pull that same trailer. I have the stock 17's. I don't have any problems pulling it. The hills will slow you down a little, but that's to be expected.

Just 'cause you have 17" wheels does not mean a thing... It's the size of the tire that goes on that wheel that matters... With a 315/70/17 tire, that makes it's overall height between 34-35"?

Combined with a 3.55 gear, you are probably only pulling around 2100 rpms @ 60 mph in 3rd gear!

I'm pulling around 2300 rpm @ 60 mph in 3rd, and can still pull pretty good sized hills in third towing a #5000 TT.

You'll get down the road, but I think you will 'bog' your engine down to where you will probably be needing 2nd gear too much??

The size trailer you have would be fine in a 'stock' gear/tire combo, but with those 34" tires on there, it's only going to hurt your trans....

If you got some 4.10 gears, you would be right around where a stock setup would be...

Good luck!

Mitch

GEARS...GEARS...GEARS....Just went from 3.55's to 4.10's for my trailer and the change is soo awesome I can't see straight. It will completely transform your truck.

I agree with the 'gears' suggestion. Your truck will do the job you're asking about now, but you would be much happier with 4.10 gears.
