Most places sell by the yard.
Around here, a 'yard' is considered to be one scoop of a front-end loader.

Your truck will handle one scoop (yard) of soil with no problem.
Two yards (scoops) will kick my trucks butt and is not worth it to me.
I'd rather make two trips than haul two yards at once.

This doesn't apply to mulch. The trucks handle two yards of mulch with ease. As a matter of fact two yards of mulch is the only time I get see my truck leveled out.
