Towing with 4.6L
Towing with 4.6L
I have 1999 F-150 with the 4.6L truck didnt come with the tow package. It is currently lifted 6in, with 295/75r17 tires, I have installed 4.56 gears and a LS unit off of a lightening. I have the basic bolt ons K&N intake, 3" catback exhaust, and Edge chip. I am planning on buying a toy box trailer that is 4950 lbs dry, I would most likely only put in one quad 350 lbs. I was wondering what size tranny cooler I should look into installing, and since the Edge doesn't show tranny temps should I put in a temp gauge? Also how hard is it to install the 7 pin connector since I only have the flat 4. Any part numbers and websites would be helpful. Walkthrough guides would also be great.
Thanks for all the help!!

I used to have 315-75-16 on it, basically a 35, so i went with those gears. I got a killer deal on these tires/rims, cheaper then i could get just tires for the 16's. These tires are basically a 33.5-34. So I think they look good.
this what im going to get

Get the biggest friggin tranny cooler you think you can fit in there. Overkill is best. And a gauge is always a good idea. I think that a gauge will be one of my summer projects...

Cant help with the tranny cooler but I can say that the swap from the 4 pin flat to 7 way round is an easy switch. I made that switch on my 97' F-150 and it took me about 10 min. I got a 7 way round plug from my ford dealer and it had a wire harness so all I had to do was un plug the 4 pin flat, plug in the 7 way round and secure the wires with zip ties and I was done.
I added a 7 pi to a99 350 not too long ago and found that the factory wire harness already had the wires there at the bumper, they were just capped off. Cost $15 for the connector and mount.
That chrome bumper was no fun to drill for mounting bolts!!

That cooler is plenty big. With your mods, 4.56 gears and sorta smallish tires, your truck won't have any problems pulling that trailer.
I have a stock 97 4.6 4x4 sc with 355's. I used to pull my stock car, tools, water (non at the track) and two passengers with a car hauler dual axle trailer through the mountains in B.C and Alberta. The truck pulled just fine.Sure it was screaming at times but these engines love to run wide open for ever it seems. That was five years ago.The truck had about 180,000 km at the time. No trailer brakes..
After 350,000 km and lots of bush bashing I'm still running the original power train. The truck has the tow package from Factory. I did rebuild thetransfer case one because the hose from the pump came off. I drove it for about a year like that and it started making noise a little. I don't know how much the trailer wieghed but I'm sure it was up there.
The trany still shifts like the day I got it (no joke!) I do change the filter and oil once a year though. And I've always used the same brand of oil since I got the truck.(this is important!) Not synthetic by the way...

Thanks for all the replys guys. I guess I'll see how the truck does, picking the trailer up tomorrow. Bad part is I could not find the right connectors to add the tranny cooler, might have to pay a shop to do it before i pick up the trailer. If not I hope it wont damage it.
