F150 and towing 5th wheel

I have a 2004 F150 4x4 reg. bed,124 in. wheelbase w 4.6 eng. and a 3.55 axle.I wanted some info about towing a 5th wheel w/ a weight of 6187lbs.and a hitch wt. of 1081 lbs. Would this be pushing the limit for this truck?

Yup. If those are the dry weights as published in a sales brochure, then yup, it's a bit much for that truck.

Here is some towing info for your 2004 F150.

Basically, you will be at your trucks limits... Please note the small print at the bottom of the page regarding 5th wheels and the F150....

Good luck!

I agree with others... That trailer will put you overweight, and you WON'T enjoy the ride at all! Although there are a few exceptions, generally you need a 3/4 or 1-ton truck (or higher) to safely support the high pin weight of 5th wheels.

I wouldn't recommend towing anything more than 5K with your set up. I had a 2002 with a 4.6l 3.55ls rear (6,200lb tow package) and it towed my 5000lb 21' boat great. I thought is was going to tow my new boat fine until I tried it. It's at 6500lbs full plus me my wife and my two kids put it over it's limit. It would pull it fine until I got to a hill, the truck wouldn't hold speed. Even trying to keep the speed and rpms up going into it didn't help. By the time I would get to the top I was doing 10-15 under the speed limit. They aren't long hills but they are steep. So I upgraded to my new truck and it tows the load without any problems. I think the rule of thumb is to not max your trucks tow rating, to keep it at or less than 75% of the rating.

Your truck would handle it ok, but it would be better to get a trailer that weighs around 5000 lbs. By the time you put your gear, food and water in it, you'll be close to 7000 lbs. and if you get a strong headwind it will be rough. I use my F150 4.6 to tow a slightly heavier 5th wheel, but mine is a 2-wheel drive so the capacity is a little higher. In any event, I need a little more truck or a little less trailer!
