towing and power

Im looking on replacing my 2000 f150, with another truck, probably a 2004-2006 f150. My question is, is the 4.6 strong enough to pull a car trailer with a car,I only tow it like once a month, i do plan on adding performance mods, i would just like to hear some opinions, and how much of a power difference is there between the older 4.6 from 1997-2003 and the new 4.6 from 2004-2007? Thanks

Why not get the 5.4? Same gas mileage (essentially) and lots more power.

Get the 5.4L,you are pulling the weight of the truck. The 4.6 can make it roll ok,but when you start loading it with people and what you want too haul that's when you notice the you don't have the power you want.Top it off with a trailer and you will wish for a bigger motor for the power you need too pass or go up hills.A bigger motor will pull better then a small one for it don't have to work as hard under a load. That's my 2 cents.

Ditto

I normally tow a trailer loaded with wood, and I have driven a friend's 4.6---I have the 5.4---and the larger engine certainly is more beneficial. Can't tell you about a power difference---I have an '02 4X4 XLT

There is no reason to buy the 4.6L other than availability. It doesn't get any better fuel ec0onomy, it has 65 ft-lb less torque, and is worth about $500 less.

The 5.4 is a stronger motor, my friend has one in his F-150 amd I got the 4.6 because they had quite a few more and were will willing to deal. I strapped 4500 lbs to the 4.6 with Od off the other day and it pulled it perfectly fine. I am also getting 18mph hwy and 15 city unloaded. I came from a v-6 dodge and this 4.6 is a mojor improvment. Once I get my TP tuner I shouldnt be too far behind 5.4 numbers

I've got a 4.6 and regularly tow about 4500 lbs over a couple of passes to our property. On a flat at highway speed, passing is no problem. Down shifts into 2nd and pulls hard at 4000 rpm. The problem is up hills when you can't maintain highway speed. At the bottom end of 2nd gear, about 30 - 40 mph in my truck, there's no power. Get the 5.4 for the extra low end torque.
