Will I need WD hitch?
Will I need WD hitch?
I have just ordered a 8.5' x 16' x 7' tall dual axle enlosed trailer with electric brakes on both axles from a local manufacturer to haul some personal belongings from CA to SC. I know that I need to buy a brake controller, but am not sure if I should go with Prodigy or Brakesmart. The next question is whether it would be safer for me to get a WD hitch?? The Items I will be moving are not that heavy, (no furnature) but it is a 2400 mile drive, and I want it to be a safe trip.
What are the guidelines to use when determining whether a weight distribution system is needed?
Any other safety considerations/ recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks!!!!

Go for the Prodigy. Rjays.com has a great price.
Your trailer probably weighs about 2500pounds empty. You'll appreciate a WD hitch with sway control for the large frontal area for that long haul.

yeah it would be a good idea to have a weight distrubtion hitch. you never know the roads you will be on nor the condistions of them. i wouldnt tow anything with out it (over 2500lbs) plus you get a cool looking hitch!!
ABE, Didnt you write in a couple of weeks ago ? Did you say you were moving to Columbia ? Trailer tonge weight has the determining factor. If the trailer and Expy are not perfectly level, it will cause all kinds of problems. Thats a long haul anyway. IMO, You might not need it. People pull big boats all the time with not WD hitch. Boats dont have alot of tonge weight. You can load heavy in the back and decrease the tonge weight, but thats what will cause sway. My advise, hook the trailer up and go for a test run, see how it pulls. Try to get an idea of how much the Expy is effected by the weight of the trailer. If the Expy is squating in the rear to where it is real noticable, your gonna need a WD hitch. The trailer weight might not be that much, but the 18 wheelers passing by fast will suck you into thier lane. It's a white knuckle ride with the WD hitch let lone without. But I had a 7500 lb, 27' trailer which I used to pull with my 03 Expy. Write me back on where you are moving.
