F-150 to tow another vehicle???

Hey guys,

I own a 1999 F-150 Lariat Supercab with the 5.4l V8 and a Auto Transmission.

Im wanting to rent a U-Haul single car trailer to tow a old 1949 F-1 from Atlanta to Pensacola (about 6 hours). Can my F-150 handle this task? I have never towed before other than a Jet Ski on my old Ranger.

I checked my hitch and it reads the following...

V-5
Weight Distributing 8700 870
Weight C 5000 500

I understand the latter number to be the tongue weight and the first to be the trailer weight correct?

Now how I do know that my f-150 can pull a U-Haul trailer with the old F-1 on it? Anyone every towed a vehicle with their F-150.

Thanks!0

It'll probably tow it, but if it handles it like my truck, dont expect to be breaking any land speed records or anything.

I tow a 16' car hauler with a tractor, loader and box blade on it. the tractor weighs about 3500 lbs. loaded and the trailer is about 1500 lbs. I'm towing total about 5000-5500 lbs. and you don't even know it's behind you. but I do use trailer brakes, which I recommend. It goes good but doesn't stop good without them. Your fine on a controlled stop but if you need to stop fast that's another story. I used my 2002 Lariat and now the 2005 both with 5.4 and auto. Happy Motoring

you will need a 2,5/16" ball on your hitch. U-Haul will nail you $5 for their 'adapter' to plug in their proprietary wiring harness to your standard flat 4 plug. The trailer will have surge brakes so you don't need an electric brake controller. U-Haul will not rent you the trailer if your tow vehicle isn't capable of pulling it safely. Their computer program will prompt the clerk to ask you for all the specific info (tow vehicle and towed vehicle) and the computer will tell them whether or not to rent you the trailer.

Your truck is fully capable of pulling that trailer easily and safely.

I just used my '01 Screw to tow my 95 5.0 AWD 4 door Explorer from WA to San Diego. I used a u-haul trailer. The 2" ball was fine - they did not require the bigger ball. Trailer, Explorer, and gear in the Explorer gave me a total trailer weight of about 7500 lbs. It pulled fine.
