tongue weight

I have a 1999 with a 4.6L and 3.55 rear end, factory tow package. Can someone tell me the max tongue weight I can have? Also, its a supercab. Manual says 7000 max trailer weight.

GVWR - Actual truck weight. What's left is the payload of your truck. You'll then need to subtract anything else you might put in the bed and additional passengers, etc. from that payload figure.

To give you a general idea, my truck is at or actually just a tad over it's GVWR of #6250 when I'm all loaded up and ready to roll with my trailer. My trailer only weighs about #4500. Of that, about #550 is the actual tongue weight.

I do have 4x4 and the extended cab. I figure my truck weighs around #5200 before I hitch up the trailer and load it up with additional stuff and two people........

My manual says I have a max tow rating of #7700...... Well, I'm sure the truck could tow that much, but considering that a trailer will have a minimum of 10% of it's total weight as tongue weight, I'd be way over the trucks GVWR with that much tongue weight. In the real world, expect the trailer to have 12-15% tongue weight when it's all loaded up and such.

Good luck!

Mitch

tongue weight is usually 10% of the total weight capacity. So a class III reciever is rated for 5000 lbs and the tongue weight would be 500 lbs

I think this is what your asking

Good info. given here. Also should be wt. rating shown on your truck hitch. You can increase that wt. by adding a wt. distributing hitch. Some info. at www.drawtite.com

Good luck...OT

Well, that would be dictated by your hitch limitations if you are not concerned about your trucks other weight limits.....

Your stock hitch from the factory should have two different ratings. One is just your standard load bearing weight of #500 tongue weight OR #5000 trailer. With a weight distribution hitch setup, you can have a #1000 tongue weight OR #10000 trailer......

There is no actual "figure" that's established for tongue weight...... Other then all the additional load limits the rest of the truck and the hitch has... You have GAWR, GVWR and GCWR. You might even have to consider your tire ratings, but those are usually more then your GAWR anyway, but it's still something to consider. You exceed any one of those ratings and technically, that's what will limit your tongue weight or payload..
