towing weight

I have an '88 F150 with a 3.55 ratio axle and an inline 6. Owners manual say's the total weight of truck AND trailer cannot exceed 7800 lbs. How do I know the weight of the truck?? The plate on the drivers door say's : GVWR 5250... is that the truck weight??? That would mean the trailer max would be 2550 lbs. Am I reading it correctly. I didn't think the 150 by itself was 5000 lbs.
Thanks for any help

GVWR is the truck weight plus the amount it will hold
(bed,cab and glovebox)

I would guess that your truck weighs between 3700 and 4100 lbs.
Go to the local dump. They should have scales there.

"Owners should always abide by the manual in towing situations."

But, you have an '88, go and tow whatever in hell you want.
