Older Trailer Maintenance

A question for you experts towing with F 150's...

Our 1990 Prowler 26T has served us well, and we've decided to hang on to it for a few more years. Weighs about 6500# loaded, and the wife's Chick Truck pulls it like a breeze.

Anyone have an older trailer that can give me some advice on maintenance? Specifically:
--how to tell if the tires are OK
--caulking/weather sealing
--anything else that I should fix/replace before it breaks?
--any good websites for additional advice?

Peace, Dennis

Hi Dennis

Somethings to consider..perhaps others will add to this..

Should be obvious on tires...How is tread depth..also do sidewalls have cracks?

When is last time the wheel bearings were greased. Usually once a year. Or could be mileage dependent.

Brakes...how are linings/drums? They also may require manual adjustment? Elect. magnets...are they working properly?

If emergency break away switch equiped..check to be sure it works. On mine...w/TT hitched to truck...but elect. tow (7pin) not connected..i pull pin on switch...try to move..you should feel resistance if working properly. If not...get it fixed.

How is the TT 12v. battery(s). That also supplies juice to operate emergency break away+interior. If old..may need replacement?

Roof...what kind? If it has seams/joints..they may require resealing/caulking. Also protrusions thru roof...pipes/vents etc. Around sidewall windows/seams. Ck. that every year. Its easy to see if sealant has cracked open or peeled/delaminated. Becareful walking on roof.

One site www.irv2.com

Good luck...OT

We had an older trailer. Things start to go bad with age. My solution was to sell it. We now rent a newer trailer cheaper than we could buy one. No maintinence, no storage, no worries.
