Anyone built their own utility trailer?

I'm thinking hard about selling my 5'x8' inclosed utility trailer this summer and building a smaller trailer to run to and from college. Has anyone built a trailer? I'm thinking about building a 4'x6' or 4'x4' with a 2000# axle and a 2" coupler. Any suggestions on kits or something? It will most likely be a closed trailer, but not the size of this one (perhaps 2' tall area; more of a trunk than a utility trailer).

Thanks in advance,
-Flea

I have not personally built a trailer, but my dad built a single axle flat trailer with removable wooden sides that are about 2.5 feet high all around, and a wooden floor. I am sure it is a 2000# axle. He built it about 12 years ago, but did not use a kit, he just went to a place that sold built trailers and parts like axles for building trailers and got some suggestions and some parts from them on building it. If you have any questions I can pass them along to my dad and get answers for you. He may not rememeber tons about building it though since it was so long ago. It did take him 9 months to build it though working about 6-8 hours a week on it if that gives you a time estimate.

I got to keep a pretty good eye on the trailer as they built ours. It is really a neat process and a lot of work is envolved to get them to roll down the road correctly.

I designed mine and had the frame built in 1988. I installed the rest.

Inside dimensions are 52" wide, 97" long, sides are 26" tall. Both front and rear gates are removable. One ton axle, 13" wheels, 1 7/8" coupler. Way better than one of those DIY kits.
It is large enough to lay 4' x8' sheets flat with the gates on.

Floor is made up with pt 2x6's, sides are 1x4's & 1x6's.

It's been great! Two house moves, two sons to college. Many loads of gravel, mulch, yard debris, appliances, etc, etc, etc.

Only two problems; 1 - it takes up one spot in the garage, 2 - everyone wants to borrow it.

I was recently thinking about trying to retro-fit a Roll-Along roll-up cover or even a hard tonneau for it. If I were to do it again, I would try to design it around some kind of removable lid.
