Question Weight dist hitch-tongue weight

Will a weight distribution hitch actually reduce the tongue weight that the truck has to carry, or does it simply redistribute the tongue weight to both axles? If the weight distribution hitch reduces the tongue weight, therefore I would be able to carry more payload?

thanks
John

Sorry man, the weight is just distributed more evenly over both axles. You do not actually reduce the weight on the truck.

~Just for conversation sake:

My old F-150 WITHOUT the bars on would drop over 6" in the rear. (I didnt bother measuring the front, it surely went UP!)

WITH the bars on properly, the rear dropped 3/4" and the front 1/2" !! What a difference eh?

The same trailer on my 350 drops the front 1/4" and the rear 1/2" with the trailer within 1/4" front to rear measured at the frame rail.

A good weight distributing system and sway control are not only necessity and safety, but a real luxury too!

Most receivers list two weight ratings, one for use with a weight-distributing hitch and one without. Check the sticker on the receiver for the actual amounts.

While it is true that your truck has a maximum capacity for towing, you can tow a larger payload with a weight-distributing hitch. Just don't exceed the total capacity for the receiver with your method of towing and of course, don't exceed the capacity of the truck.
