im with you on this one. my jeep does a lot better and is not nearly as expensive. lol i think most people who buy raptors use it for more as a show rather than the gov they were designed for. but to the OP, a fx4 with a lift and tires designed for mud will be better than a raptor and more than likely cheaper. i think you can get the 6.2 in non raptor trucks now but im not smart on all that stuff. lol

yes you can get the 6.2 in the new F150's. I think you should get either truck and buy something else, like a jeep or a bronco, for fun. I would not use a new $40K truck for any serious offroading.

If your planing on tail riding then the FX4, the Raptor will be too wide for that. For buying a truck on the purpose of trail riding/ mudding get something smaller, full size trucks are to big and heavy.
Id love to get a Raptor myself for the sole purpose to see how it would do on the road to my camps. The roads to the 2 are sand/gravel mix thats always wash board and holes

Bah thats what warranty is for. I tore the rack and pinion apart on my Ranger twice in one year, first one was a month after I bought it Broadsiding a skidder rut and stopping you dead does wonders on the front end

My vote would be the Raptor, but of course I am biased.

I just took my Raptor mudding for the first time and once you turn off all the 'Nannies' she is an absolute BEAST!

If you can spend $50,000 on a truck, then get the FX4 and spend $10,000 on it. You could make an absolutely amazing truck for $50,000 and have it exactly how you want it with no compromises. You could get a lift, rims, tires, regear it, and get a winch and be out the same amount of money as a raptor costs

from my experience off road id say get yourself 2 trucks lol. Raptors are nice but I think lifting any other model and putting on your own mods is better, at least your building what you want it to be oppossed to something that isn't changing from how you bought it, and then buy a 80-96 f150 and lift that for offroading
thats my $.02

from what the OP has said about the type of off roading he is doing either truck should do just fine just depends on the $$$$ he wants to spend. could get a FX4 for a DD and a beater 4X4 for the trails or have a nice and scratched up raptor cause they are wider..but i agree with the guys suggesting a FX4 and mods to suit what you need

thats what I ment, I really like the look of the raptor and for the guys who buy them and put them to their intended purpose god bless em, but for the price of a raptor you can buy anyother f150 and still afford to do a ton of things to it or the new f150 and still swing an old f150, craigslist from as low as a grand or 2 you can find lifted f150s you won't worry about scratching up

OP,

A raptor will stomp a FX4 in just about any off road situation. The taller tires and ground clearance will make it better in the mud, clear rocks or doing just anything imaginable.

The only draw back is the raptor is wider than stock and will have greater chance to rub on obsticals.

To all you ne sayers that say " The Raptor should only be used for what FORD designed it for", what a bunch of crap. Nobody does that. If you can afford the truck and you want to play then its a great option.

The off road softer suspension it has will not affect it in the mud any more than th towing package suspension on a FX4 turck will. ITs a damn truck. Not some holy grail that should be put on a pedistool.

I challenge anyone to give an actual reason why a Raptor wouldnt be better than a standard truck in any offroad situation.

Sheesh guys.

OP the raptor will kick but in the mud if you get rid of the BFG AT/s. They are worthless in the mud.

Buys some BFG MT KM2's and go wheeling with your rear locker, you will go farther than any other standard truck, tires and a locker are what makes it.

done........
