Question Anyone Had This Same Problem??

I have a 2002 FX4 5.4L S/C and about two weeks ago started hearing a clunking sound coming from the right rear of the truck. This was when I was turing right and going over elivated areas (entrances into parking lots, speed bumps, and water culverts).

Today I figured out that it was coming from the right rear wheel. When I shook the tire and wheel back and forth it made the clunking sound. It seemed like the wheel was loose but the lugnuts were all tight.

Anyway, it took it to the dealership. They said it is normal for the rearend to make a clunking noise to a degree but would keep the truck to check it out. Won't know anything until tomorrow.

Also, has anyones gear shifter on their automatics been giving them a problem where you have to pull up on it when it is in park so the key will release from the ignition?? Their going to fix that also. Love the new smiles

I slight amount of play is normal and necessary. The axles are held in the differential by C-Clips. The C-Clips need a slighty amount of play, or they wouldn't receive any lubrication.

There may be a problem if there is more than just a little play though. I beleive the right axle is just slightly longer than the left axle. Could be that they put 2 right axles in your truck or that the axle itself is just too long.

Play should be minimal. It definately should not clunk.

The issue with the shift lever is not normal either. You can't remove the key from the ignition unless the transmission is in park so there must be something wrong if it's not going into park. Dealer should take care of it.

Hey AjRagno

I appriciate the feed back. I picked up my truck today. They took apart the differential and said the "pinnion" or something like that was off a little so they adjusted it, if that makes sense. I have'nt noticed if the clunking is still there. Very minimal driving today. Everything else they said looked fine.

Thanks again
