heavy duty shock problems

ok let me start 1997 f-150 4x2 with a 4.2 v-6
I got a set of 4 Explorer Pro Comp ES9000 Shocks, back where no problem, when I got to the front they are just to big to fit in. After hours of frustration I gave up and ran down the road to get some monro light duty shock, now my question to anyone out there, Have you replaced the front shocks in a truck similar to mine with heavy duty or will they only take light duty? Or did they just give me the wrong shocks at the parts store?

Gee, it's frustrating enough working on these trucks, but having to deal with the wrong parts, arg!
