welding on the frame ok?

I want to know if anyone knows the skinny on whether or not it's ok to weld onto the frames on the late model f-150's? I thought that I had heard something about them being Hydroformed? or something and that welding to them will make them brittle or weak or something? anyone know if they are different than old school truck frames? cuz the old school frames seem to hold up perfectly fine to welding. I am designing my own custom suspension setup and could use existing holes as mounting spots, but welding my own brackets to the frame would save some time.

Four Wheeler Parts Wholesalers here in SA welds nerf bars onto the frame. I used to weight 270 and they held up, still do at 230.
some makers of aftermarket heavy duty bumper replacements will weld them on.

I'll go through some of my Four Wheeler mags to see how some have made their suspension mods.
