FX4 Ranchos a bit stiff
FX4 Ranchos a bit stiff
Just wondering if anyone else feels their FX4 package is a bit too stiff with the Ranchos. I assume they are an equivelant to a RS5000.
I've owned RS9000 and REALLY loved them on one of my previous vehicles.
I guess I just like the ability to make them stiffer or softer.
My current truck is an 02 4x4 with the FX4. My most previous one was a 99 4x4 and rode much better.
Wonder if Ford would buy me some 9000's and take my stock shocks back.

As you can see from my signature, I have a 2002 FX4 also. It was very stiff when I first bought it but loosened up a little after it broke in. I think that it is still pretty stiff but I have not driven many other full size trucks to compare it too. I know my Jeep Cherokee and a Ford Ranger I used to own were a little on the stiff side also. I don't mind it much since it is a truck.
I agree. The FX4 is very stiff. I had a '97 with the off road package and it was much softer than the FX4. I've also had the RS9000's on a previous truck and loved them. The FX4 shocks feel like the 9000's set on 4 or 5, great for off roading but a little stiff on the highway
interceptor...I think you mean 1 or 2 on the settings. I used to refer to setting #5 as "Caddy with old worn out shocks setting". It seemed to just float around and would never stop.
My 9000's were on a Toyota 4Runner that I used to do a little rock crawling with. I set them on 1 (stiffest setting) and after loosing a couple of fillings in my teeth, I got under the Runner and set them on 2 and 3.
Well, my truck has been at the dealers shop for 2 days now. My tranny wanted a little TLC. They put me in an '02 Explorer. Ride is good, but that 4.0L leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to power.

FYI: I believe the settings are 1-5 ( softest to hardest ). My F150 set to 5 on the RS9000 will almost crack the crown on my right rear tooth...
p.s. I would advise against driving on paved roads for any distance set to 5 unless you have a nice sized weight in the rear. I tried it coming out of the deer lease and realized very quickly I should set them back to a 1 or 2 setting for the highway...
There are other post discussing the FX4 'Rancho' shocks and how they are 'OEM branded'. The meat of the conversation boiled down to a ford OEM shock with permission from Rancho to put their look and name on them.
Good Luck,
