I was at the dealer for an alignment the other day and they said it could not be done till I had my rightside lower ball joint replaced.

They recomended replacing both lower at the same time.
Parts:$91.00
Labor:$270.00
Alignment:$145.00

I DON'T THINK SO

I've learned quite a bit about ball joints over the past few days and with the proper tools, it doesn't seem to be too complicated. I plan on buying a ball joint press kit as well as greasable ball joints and replacing all 4 next week if the weather is warm enough.

***I don't believe the OEM ball joints are greasable so it's no wonder they fail prematurely***

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the upper ball joints can only be replaced by replacing the entire upper control arm, as the upper ball joint is incorporated in the arm.

Not sure about the uppers but the BFH (Big F'n Hammer) was necessary to get my lower ball joint off. Good luck!

all I know is I had the same reaction when I heard the repair costs. Of course I was going through Sears so it was quite less than the price you posted. I decided to do it myself but upon trying, I gave up rather quick. Quite a job if you dont have the right tools or if you lack patients

lucky for me my truck was still under waranty and the uper ball joint is part of the A-arm so you have to replace the A-arm to replace the uper ball joint...Ford knows about this problem and will not do anything to corect it

What kind of symptoms will a bad ball joint give you? I know you can have abnormal tire wear or they will pop but, what else? Could they cause a vibration like a bad bearing or missing wheel weight? What about tie rods, does the same thing apply?

my balljoints are gone too -

They said I need uppers and lowers. Just found out when I went to get an alignment after installing the BFGs at 83000. Funny thing is I just had it at the dealer for other maintenance work and they didn't mention it. So I'm having them take a look as a second opinion. Asked the dealer to give me a price just in case they had to be done ....... $472.59 for just the lowers!! He then said expect the same for the uppers. $950 or so for balljoints???!!! I plan to look for a cheaper place if I need them
