Torsion Bars Question

I am want to crank the torsion bars on my truck to raise the front about an 1". I am looking at putting 285 / 75 R16 Cooper Discover AT's on the truck. I was told at my local tire shop that cranking the torsion bars was probably not a good idea. There alignment guy told me that when I do that it would be very difficult to realign and get back to the factory specs and that he has seen some torsion bars break due to much tension. I would like to get more lift but don't want to hurt the truck or have warranty problems at my local dealer. I have heard many people doing this with either Ford or Chevy and want to do it myself but this has brought questions to my mind about my decision. I would appreciate any comments

Thanks
