1998 F150 XL 4.2 Shock Replacement

Noticed a number of different threads on shocks, and I think I have read the majority of them. The consensus is that Bilstein's are a great upgrade from my factory 100K old shocks, and that the ShockWarehouse.com is a reasonably priced spot to shop.

Question i have is, which Bilsteins are better for me.. My truck is basic, and I just want to firm up the ride. the options available to me are

- 5100 Racing series (not a racing truck )
- BST heavy Duty (its a 1/2ton with a 4.2 6 in it,, no overly heavy duty)
- BST Sport Valving (reads as stiffer than the heavy duty version, )

Still new to this, I am mainly looking for a comfortable ride and not sure if stiffer is better? or can it get too stiff?

Based on what little dribble I have managed to say here, would a different shock be better?

Appreciate the insight

cheers

Gabriel

If your stock height than the 5100's aren't for you, there for lifted trucks only on the 97-03's. Hd's are good if you do any offroading, drive on a bunch of bad roads, tow, etc. otherwise there's a lot of other shocks out there for stock trucks that mainly see highway or good roads that may suit you better.

I don't off-road, its a commuter truck and a junk hauler for the house,, I pull a small trailer every now and then but that about it..

Can you recommend an alternative to the Bilstein?

I went with the Pro Comp ES9000's. AutoAnything has them on sale:
http://www.autoanything.com/suspensi...A6565A0A0.aspx

I've got some pics in my garage. I didn't notice a great deal of difference from the Gabriels that were on there prior, but I also put new tires, control arms, and lower ball joints on around the same time.

I've heard KYB is another OEM replacement that work's well. 4WheelParts had the ES9000 on sale buy 3 get one free, so that's what I went with.

I'm happy with them.

Only other ones I've looked into are the procomp es9000s and the rancho 9000s, both are good shocks, but there's more out there too.

Good to hear. Contact TruckXL here on the forums (posts in Tire/Wheel/Brakes forum). He reps for BuyBrakes.com and can give you a discount code.

I went with the K1865 kit (front rotors and pads) for less than $220 shipped. Installed myself. Happy with the brakes so far.
