Straight Axle on 2006 F150??

Howdy!

I'm currently running a 6" pro comp stage 1 lift w/ 35's. I am wanting to bump up to 37s . Since I am going larger I was considering doing a SAS. I have read a little on what all it consists of but but don't know how reasonable it would be to do with 37's and how much of ride quality I would lose while on the streets. If anyone can give me some details on what all would be affected or what certain parts I should look to use that would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

i wanted to do it too. although i would have to pay a shop because i am to busy to do the work myself and having to piece all of the parts together would be annoying and lastly, it is really expensive. when i priced it all out i was looking at around 8 grand.

unless you have a lot of extra money and time it wouldn't be worth it if you ask me.

Do you have 5k+ to do it? 5k is you doing it yourself and finding killer deals and being able to fab and weld.

Ride quality: you did not mention leaf springs or linked suspension. it makes a huge difference. Links are easily 2-3x as much as a simple leaf sprung

Whose steering are you going to use? easily will have 500 in that.

Drive shafts? $350+ for that. I think I paid $960 for 2 shafts w/ double cardans and a ton of slip in the shaft.

what are you going to do about wheels? different bolt pattern front and rear? have custom adapters made up front?

Axle width: Can you find one to match the f150 rear, or is it going to have to be cut down and custom inner axles made

gears: leaving your rear gear set alone or regearing? have to match the front axle which i HIGHLY doubt will have 4.56's or 4.88's unless some one has regeared it.

if you are going to swap in a Straight axle, i'm assuming you wheel hard. Might as well figure out a front locker to install. Install a rear as well.

You'd need to PM ogterror and ask about ABS.

I honestly don't believe most people need a straight axle on these trucks, they just think it sounds cool and think it will be as cheap as a kit for the OBS chevy's which unfortunately it is not. Go look at petersons new ecoboost build. Mid travel is becoming pretty popular on newer IFS trail rigs. It can be built stout and work good with a properly tuned set up.

I know you have to use super duty Axles for the abs/speedo to work easily.

All of the above. I just got done putting a Dana 60 in the front of my 01. Used f350 leaves, all home made hangers and shackles. F350 steering, 350 brake lines. I rebuilt the front end with new bearings and seals and lockouts. All said and done I've got 3700 into it. That's the front. Still rolling on the 9.75 out back as I'm still in the process of rebuilding a 10.25 for the rear. Could get by cheaper if you used all junkyard parts but I used all new steering arms, brakes, leaf bushings. Pretty much everything is new except the leaves. On your 06 you have to mount a steering box as you have rack and pinion. I didn't have to worry about that.
