POP Noise in Front End when in 2WD/4WD
POP Noise in Front End when in 2WD/4WD
Hey again guys, have a question that will probably lead me back into the alignment shop, but wanted to see if anyone else has had it.
A bit of background: I've read all the threads on IWE replacement, etc. And I recently replaced the IWE Actuator and Solenoid on my 07 4WD F150 SuperCrew.
My issue is that when I reverse in 2WD (or 4WD for the sake of argument) I get a one-time popping noise, then it goes away. Also, it wont replicate the noise while in any forward gear. The pop comes while reversing and turning, like pulling out of a parking spot.
I recently had it aligned and it was fine for a couple weeks, now I get the noise. I thought it was an IWE Actuator, as it wouldn't hold vacuum, so I thought that was the issue, now thats replaced and the issue remains. The hubs are disengaged in 2WD as they should be, so it leads me to believe its suspension related.
I will definitely go through the old "tighten every bolt you can find" in the front end, and probably take it back to the alignment shop, but was curious if anyone had any insight on ball joints, tie rod ends, etc that may pop under stress, while reversing.
Thanks in advance!

Upon further inspection, it would appear that the CV shaft is still spinning, even in 2WD. When the truck is jacked up, and no load is on the wheel, it will freewheel as it should, however I was finally able to have someone else drive it while I watched and thats when I saw the issue.
So, even after replacing the IWE, and verifying that it has good vacuum to it, it is still failing to disengage. Back to the drawing board.

Popping noise
Hey, I have the same issue but mine is a 2WD 97 F150 XLT 4.6L. It only pops once while backing up and turning the wheels, Will not do the problem in forward at all. Truck drives fine and no other clunk or popping noises. Def from front end and can not feel any vibration thru steering wheel or brake pedal. Happens hot or cold. Odometer broke at 110K. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks

Buxton91, Thank you for the suggestion. I know that i dont have any cv joints up front and completely different set up, however, i have the same crazy noise caused by backing and turning, i can recheck the pitman arm and connections again. i heard it again today and felt it thru the floor. will update you guys if i find anything that may be useful for you 4 wheelers. once again, thank you for the suggestion.

I have a 2wd like captain wade but I get a single pop when turning in drive, or while putting the truck in gear. Its at the shop right now so ill post the results. I hope im not digressing too much :P
Thought I'd follow up on this one. After pulling it apart again, I had a VERY loose Upper Control Arm Ball Joint. I'd tightened it up before, but the years of the leveling kit must have finally taken its toll.
New UCA's and a fresh alignment later, all is well again.

Update
Hey I know it's been a while but are there any updates on this?
I have a '14 F150 Eco and when backing up and turning I hear a similar popping sound. I was just wondering if anyone came across a fix. My truck will be in the dealership for the third time soon for this issue.
