Adjusting the setting on Bilstein 5100s

I have a set of Bilstein 5100s on my truck. Currently the setting is sitting at 2". I want a little more level out of the truck.

So I'm planning on adjusting up to a 2.5" leveling kit & setting the Bilsteins back down to 0" setting. When I am taking the struts out while installing the leveling kit does anyone know how to adjust them? I can't find a source online on how the settings work.

Any help would be much appreciated

You have to remove the spring from the shock and reposition the ring that holds the spring perch to the appropriate slot. Once you get the spring off, it's pretty self explanatory when you see it. Move that ring and reassemble.

Can you remove the strut from the spring with normal tools or do you need a spring compressor?

You'll need a compressor. Or, you can take the struts down to your nearest front end shop, toss them $20.00, and let them compress the spring and move the little clip. I have found that this takes a lot less time than going to your nearest parts shop, borrowing the compressor, compressing the spring(sort of scary), then returning the compressor.

Yeah that is what I think I might do. I have lifetime alignments at Firestone. So they have gotten to know me pretty well. I probably will do that. Thanks!

Yer gonna seriously do that? I would think it would be better to add a 3/8 or 1/2 inch spacer if you can find one. I think the way you are planning on doing this is like trading an ounce of gold for an ounce of silver.

If you are hell bent on doing it this way, ya may as well change all 4 ball joints now and get a head start on em, you are going to do it sooner than later with the spacer anyway.

If it is a little too high on the back end, have you considered swapping out the rear spacer to something less tall, say a 2 1/2 inch instead of what I assume is a 3 inch?

Well my deal is that it is a pretty raked right now. I wish it was more level. That is the main thing. The 2" level just didn't do it for me.

That's what I've been suggested to do with out doing a body lift or something

I removed my 2 inch block and made a 1 inh block. I have bilsteins on 2 inch level. The 2.5 inch level is really tough on the front end.

A body lift will not fix your current rake, no matter what. It'll simply give you a taller truck with the same angles you have now. You just need to leave well enough alone and save up for a lift kit and do the job right.

Or lower the rear end.

Hmm....alright. I really don't plan on lifting it. I got 100k on this truck and it's a daily driver. I just don't see spending that kind of cash on a truck I don't offroad that often anyways.

Just go w/ your plan of a 2.5" up front and bilsteins at 0

Being at 100k, if you haven't done ball joints, do those while you have it split apart.

Could always just put a smaller rear block than stock.

Measure how much lower you want to go, then go measure your rear block and subtract and order that size rear block

On the 2009+, the 4X4 comes with a 1.25 inch block from factory. I believe the 04-08 came with a 1.5, but not positive about that. I am positive about the block I pulled out of my '10 though, it is positively a 1.25". When I put my 5100's in at max height, the truck sat nose high with the factory blocks in the rear, so I replaced them with a 2 inch block, and leveled it almost perfect. If you have the Bilsteins set at max now, and you are positive about this, then you MUST have at some replaced the rear block with a 3+inch block, or done an add-a-leaf, or even air bags add-on, if you still have alot of rake. With the factory blocks, and factory springs, and 5100's set at max, you would not have a rake problem.

What measurement is the current block you have in the truck now? It's a pain in the rear to get a true measurement, especially with the way you have to tilt your head to get a good reading. I think dropping the back end is a much better option.
