Knocking Sound While Going Over Bumps
Knocking Sound While Going Over Bumps
Good evening,
For the last few months I've been noticing a knocking sound in both the front and rear while going over speed bumps or potholes. I can't exactly pinpoint the sound, but it sounds like some type of metallic on metallic contact that is causing it.
My first thought (I know nothing about suspensions) is that perhaps my shocks are worn out. My truck is an '05 and has about 75k on it. I've only owned the truck since 2010, so I have no way to know if they have been replaced.
Any ideas on things I can check out? If it's shocks, I'm probably going to upgrade to Bilstein 5100's. I'm due for new tires soon, so I'd rather just do everything at once to save myself some coin.

Thanks, I'll check those out next time it's light out and I'm not at work.
Stand in/on the door sil and hold onto something so you can lean out the truck and rock back and fourth as hard as you can. I've had shocks that made a funny sound when they reversed directons and this was how I actually pinned it down to the shock. Odds are around 99.547769% that if the shocks look stock, they're still the originals.
+1 on the Sway bar links. I chased that demon down for months before I figured it out. Easy to check (Just look) and replace (less than 20 buck - replace both ends)
