FX2 Lowering / Towing

Hello F150 Online,

I'm a new member here, but not new to forums or car/truck forums (FTE & LX Member). I'm not sure if this post should be here or Street Scene.

I recently sold my '01 F-350 PSD and '07 Dodge Magnum SRT and purchased an '07 F-150 SuperCab FX2 to handle ALL my driving needs. I like to mod my vehicles and this will be no different, but because I need the truck to tow and be a DD, my mods have to be "practical" when it comes to suspension or lowering.

I have read MANY posts on lowering and towing, but not much regarding FX2s. I see guys with 22s, Saleens or older trucks etc. And the lowered trucks I see towing seem to mainly be the 99-03? Maybe not.

I'm looking for a good lowering advice on the FX2 that will not diminish my towing capability. I'm towing a 4500 lb. enclosed v-nose trailer that has some pretty good tongue weight. Currently, when I have the trailer hooked up, the truck will sit perfectly level and it looks perfect, just a bit too high overall. I'm afraid if I do a 3/5 or even 2/4 drop, she will ride nose high.

I want the best solution and not too concerned with cost as long as it's right, any opinions or suggestions? Which is the BEST lowering kit available? What is the best method, (coils, springs, shackles, a combination, spindles, etc.)?

TIA

Anyone here?

Okay, not too much activity here, so I'll post again. My driving needs have changed and I no longer need to tow, so height and ride quality are #1.

I finally managed to wrangle a set of Saleen wheels together (1-2 at a time)and am now looking to purchase some lowering components. This subject seems to be all over the map and there is not one clear favorite among F150 enthusiasts.

I'm also unclear on a couple subjects that are not discussed very often; c-notch, pinion angle and/or carrier bearing re-location. When do these things come into play; 2/4, 3/5 or...?

I also just found the Belltech drop spindles for my year, but haven't heard of anyone using them. I think the DJM spindles can be used as well, but again, VERY little information on these products.

Will a 3/5 drop work with the Saleens? Is it better to go spindles or springs/shocks? My buddy used the McG flip kit on his Dodge and doesn't recommend it. Is there a way to get more than 4" drop in the rear without a flip?

Please share your knowlege and experience. My time in the States is limited and would like the best solution the first time so I can enjoy my ride.

You should do some research on Lightning forums like Lightningrodder.com and Nloc.net. Those guys have tried everything for lowering. I know because I used to be one of them before I traded my L for an FX4. I went through four revisions of the suspension before finding one I liked. I had the springs de-arched and cut coils in the front. It wasn't waaaay low, but I didn't have anything rubbing and wasn't wasting the front spoiler like I was with spindles.

You can easily get 4" out of shackles and de-arching. I found a local place in that did the de-arching for $70 per spring and did a great job. AND the ride felt like stock, unlike aftermarket leafs.

Thanks for the tips on the sites, I'll check them out.

I'm going to doing a DJM lowers 2/5 drop and adding the Saleens; hopefully that will put me where I want to be. I'll post pics when it's done, which should be around the second week of Dec.

I'd lower it and get a helper bag setup and call it a day.

yup what stealth said. if youre not really towing anymore than the helper bags arent really a must but they do help with ride quality even without a load.

i see you are going with the DJM LCAs and a flip kit. if you have not already purchased this kit you may want to reconsider. i highly recomend the belltech drop struts for the front and the belltech flip kit for the rear with the street performance shocks. i have had several different dropped trucks with several different components and companies and i can tell you this belltech stuff is top notch and by far the best ride i have ever had with a static drop.

the drop struts for the front are adjustable from 3" of drop to 1" of lift and utilize the stock springs. im at -3 and it rides like stock only better.

the street performance shocks for the rear are amazing. way better than the calmax i had on one of my chevys. the belltech kit also come with a carrier bearing relocation kit.

hope this helps and feel free to ask more questions if ya need.

I have a ground force 2/5 kit and it rides well. I also got a McGauphys airbag kit because of the flip in the rear. I normally just use 10psi driving around. If i put my car trailer on, i up it to about 50-60psi.

heres a pic.

I've been planning on switching over to belltechs drop struts in the front. The Ground Force springs are a little bouncy.

Just an fyi - Not sure about the DJM lca's for the newer f150s but the ones for the Lightnings had issues with sway bar link misalignment to the point where guys were breaking the links.

The GF springs are bouncy if you're running stock struts. I am running the GF coils with Eibach struts and they're perfectly sporty.

Well, THAT'S GREAT!!! I literally just paid for the DJM kit before I saw these posts!!!

Anyways, too late now; I'll just use what I got coming and if I don't like it, I'll the Belltech struts. I have no problem doing that.

Venmous28,
Great pic!!!!, that's exactly what mine SHOULD look like (same body, color and same wheels except mine are silver). I did hear though that some trucks end up dropping a little more or even a little less even when the same drop kits are used; so we'll see how mine looks compared to yours when it's done. Will your's go "level" without air in the bags?

Thanks everyone, I'll keep you posted. She should be done by the second week of Dec.

i have roush struts on mine. My stocks were bad and i got a great deal on the Roush's but they totally are the right strut for the job.

Yea, it will level out if not a little lower in the rear. That pic i had like ~30psi in the bags i think. I now run 10-15psi so its a little lower..

My front tires scrub my fenderwell liners on bigger bumps and bridge transitions on the highway. Nothing to serious, rubber on plastic.
