"Death Wobble"

Anybody with lift kits, leveling kits, or larger tires experiencing this? Twice now I have been on the interstate over 65mph and my steering has started to shake back and forth...somewhat violently the first time. This never happended until I put a 2" Readylift and "slightly" larger tires on. Nobody can tell me what it is. I've just heard it referred to as "death wobble".

It's usually a loose steering component that causes the wobble. Make sure you tightened your ball joints. If you haven't had it aligned, that might also be contributing to it.

Alignment being off or bad/lose ball joints , Tie-rod ends, or other steering components are by far the most likely culprits.

Yes...the shop that installed the kit and tires did an alignment. Also, a week later I hit the biggest pothole I've ever hit and it shifted my steering wheel off center so I had the dealer do another alignment. Ford said I might need to install stabilizer. Might be one of other issues stated above though.

I'd say your steering could be lose. My buddy had the worst death wobble and all it was a bolt loose. I mean it shook his dash off, hence why I hate Jeeps.

Wrong year, he has a rack and pinion system.

Your inner tie-rod could be loose from that pot hole and or damaged. Have a shop check them out who knows what they are doing. Most 50 dollar alignment shops don't even know what an inner tie-rod is. This is the section of the tie-rod on the rack side and not the spindle side.

when mine had the death woble it occured after i had hit a hole pretty hard. then it would wobble everytime i hit a bump in the road. it ended up being the pitman arm. I would check to see if everything is tight like stated before, but if everything is tight i would look into replacing the pitman arm and/or idler arm.

I found this thread while doing a search on this subject. Recently we replace ball joints, tie rods inner and outer and got an alignment.
The truck just started doing this again.
I put it on jack stands and got underneath it and push beck and forth on the tires, one with my foot and the other with my hand. I'm getting some slack from the steering gear box. The Pittman and Idler arm doesn't have but a fraction of movement, But the gearbox looks like it has quite some distance in it.
Has anyone else noticed a problem like this?

The truck has 183 k by a younger driver. But mine has 204k and no slack at all. I'm just wondering if anyone has had this problem.

I wouldn't know....I personally don't have the mechanical know-how to check it myself. My dealer checked my truck and said it could be a number of things, but that I might want to consider installing a front-end stabilizer, which may or may not resolve the problem.

I still get it but very seldomly....has only happened 2 or 3 times since I installed new tires/rims and always at a high speed.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.
