shocks going bad?
shocks going bad?
the other day i hopped in the bed of my truck and heard an awful squeak, so i got underneath and hung from it and found out it was the shock..well i didnt feel like replacing it then so i figured i would just wait till this weekend, and i was driving through town and every time i would hit a bump i could hear the horrible squeak!
hopped in the bed today, no squeak?\
how can you tell if they are going bad, if they squeak does that mean they are going bad?

The Squeaking could mean that she shock is bad, have you noticed the back of your truck bouncing more than usual while driving? Another easy way to tell that your shocks have gone bad is to jump on that corner and bounce up and down a few times then jump off. If it doesn't return to regular height quickly (1-2 bounces) the shock isn't doing its job.

i hope they arent..the truck has almost 149k on it now..
ive been thinking about changing the back to air shocks..what are thoughts on that?
If OE, they are shot. Probably have been since 30-50k. Truck suspensions do not show bad shocks symptoms like cars do, since the suspension is so heavy.
I would not put on air shocks. They put more stress on the shock mounts when pumped up. Shock mounts are not made to support weight.
Just get a decent set of shocks. Monro Gas Magnum, etc. Or if you don't have have a problem spending more for a very good set, get something like the Bilsteins.

nows the time to get a lift haha. my 4 bilstiens came with a 6" kit haha.
replacing the shocks just makes it a completly different truck. after extending my front ones when i leveled it over summer it rode like crap. much better now

im not sure if they are OE or not, i bought the truck with 115k on it..ok so thats a no on the air shocks lol
im gonna keep the height the same as far as lift/lowering goes..
so just regular monro shocks will be fine? im not looking to spend the bilstein money lol

Get something decent, like the gas magnums. Gabriel also makes some decent shocks. Be aware, if you are going to change them yourself, the rear upper mount is a ROYAL PITA. Start using penetrating oil and a wire brush on the threads about a week ahead.
You can see all of the shocks we have for your truck here:

The Gasmagnums will be $154.41 for the full set of four with the 5% F150online member discount.

Airshocks are old technology and aren't made for many vehicles anymore. There isn't one made for your truck. If you do a lot of towing and hauling and want extra capacity, check out the Airlift air spring kit, which is a heavy duty air bag that can be inflated like an airshock when you're carrying a heavy load and deflated when your bed is empty so that it doesn't affect your ride.
There is also a Monroe loadleveler shock that includes a heavy duty spring wound around the shock for extra carrying capacity.
