shock quality comparison
shock quality comparison
had SEARS install Rancho shocks in my 02 FX4 F150 XLT.
I think they were the factory replacements.
this happened in the spring.
Well the shock came undone on the top and started banging around on the mount and now seems to be stuck in the down position( it should be trying to go fully extended I would think!)
i called SEARS and they said they cant get those RANCHO shocks any more..
and the Web site says it will take 20 days to get in stock!
I told them then they have to replace BOTH shocks in front, because i cant keep driving with that shock banging around. i 'll probably end up messing up the mount area.
so they offered to install a pair of Monroe REFLEX shocks.
My question is; are they comparable in quality and application???
thanks

I doubt it. No shock is "still going strong" after 100,000 miles, sorry. They may not be horrible but they're not that great. Shocks degrade so minutely over time you don't notice, and adapt to the change. Put some brand new ones on there and compare, that's the only way to tell.
Since it was an '02, I'm guessing the Rancho shocks you bought were 5000's. If so, they are not gas charged, which means they will not extend on their own. Also not a stock replacement shock. The 5000's are a better shock than anything that came on your truck. Even if your truck came stock with the so called "Rancho" shocks, they're not really Rancho's. I find it hard to believe it would take 20 days to track down a 5000 for your truck. Very popular shock. Depending on the mileage you can replace just the bad one, but I ask this...why did it come loose? Did the nut simply fall off the top? That's an easy fix and nothing wrong with the shock if so. Just re-nut it and be on your way.
