Need new shocks, suggestions please

Hi Guys,

So my dad gave me the truck a couple years ago and for the most part I just drive it and only replaced what was broke.

I did do some basic mods but for the most part I have not done much to the truck.

Okay so I have decided its time to replace the OEM shocks as the truck as 14x,xxx on it now. I do not plan to lift my truck no lower it. I am perfectly fine with the stock height and I currently have 20 inch rims on it and may change it out for 22's at some point.

What I am really interested in is having a better ride. Currently when I hit a pot hole or bump the truck some what jumps around so im sure its time to change the shocks.

Now with my other cars I normall opt for the performance shocks but I really don't do any type of driving in my truck that warrants that. I tow my bikes and quads with it occasionally and some times rarely tow something but I never off road it or anything.

What would be some good quality reasonably priced OEM replacement shocks?

I have a 1998 STX step side(flareside??) single cab

You can get some Bilstein's for around $70 a piece with free shipping should work nice for you. They will not change your ride heigth either. However you are getting up in millage so shocks are a good starting point but you may want to start inspecting other components in your frontend for wear that could throw loose play into the system. Just a heads up.

Sir,

If you are at 140k miles, you are probably due to replace the OEM shocks. Although there isn't a specific time frame to do so, that most certainly would be a time to do it.

It depends on what you use the vehicle for as well. Off Roading, Towing, etc?

Bilstein Heavy Duties are a decent and affordable replacement that will last longer than other options and we have them for 10% off with free shipping. They aren't as stiff or expensive as the Bilstein 5100s. The HDs fall in between OEM's and 5100's as far as stiffness goes. However a cheaper alternative would be Monroe Reflexes (about $15 less per shock than Billie HD's).

Here's the results of your vehicle for the shocks we carry - http://www.shockwarehouse.com/index....cted_year=1998.

I'd be happy to answer any questions that you may have.

I already had to replace the hubs/ spindels on both sides as well as upgraded the rotors to slotted and X drilled thanks to some idiot side swiping me on the fwy (He bounced off a semi but only hit my rim/ tire so only suspension damage )

Its Ma'am or Ms but thank you.

I do not off road my truck because it has 20 inch wheels with low pro tires on it, thus making off roading pointless. How ever I recently picked up a set of OEM rims and tires to use when I take the quads out to the dirt so I don't have to worry about the other rims.

it is also 2x also making it pointless to off road.

Thank you for the information regarding the HD I will look into it

i dont care, 50 bucks for all 4 factory Ford black shocks? add somewhere around 15 bucks to ship them and ill send them out. they have less then 30k on them, and have been garaged since removal.
I robbed the bushings off of the fronts a while back, but i may not need the bushings anymore, so it should be a full setup

You may want to look at Rancho 9000XLS they have adjustable settings for road comfort, 9 settings that are very easy to adjust. Check them out...

Ms. Lyte. Sorry about that.

Those are a good alternative, but they will run over $100 per shock. So although you do have the ability to manually adjust them they are still about $30 more per shock than the Bilstein HDs. Even more pricey if you get the on board controller.

We carry both, just trying to save you $$.

If you go with new shocks, I don't think you can beat the Bilsteins. I recently installed them on my truck and it's much improved. If dollars are a major factor, those used ones are a pretty good deal.
