Remove leveling kit
Remove leveling kit
Guys I need to remove the leveling kit on my truck. I recently bought the truck and I have to do some towing and I don't like the reverse rake it does when I have a load on the truck. My upper control arms are touching the springs and I can only suspect it is because of the load and the extreme droop on the front.
I seen the thread to install the levelers but I thought if you bought a spring compressor you did not have to disconnect the ball joints or the sway bar.
Is this not true? Seems to me I could get a strut spring compressor and put the front arms at full droop, compress the springs and then remove it. I have replaced struts on cars and trucks before I have never had to remove ball joints and such.
Maybe the leveling kit is different. Please help. I would probably keep it if I was willing to spend the money on bigger wheels and tires and a rear suspension helper but not in the market to do that at this time.
Thanks a bunch.

I would just disconnect the sway bar and upper ball joint. It takes two minutes. There is very little room to get a coil spring compressor in there. I doubt you would be successful with your method.
On my '09 I had to compress the spring to get the strut assembly back in. The spring was so stiff I could hardly compress it. Remember that the leveling block sits up inside the strut mount on the frame. It won't just slide right out by compressing the spring a bit.
Oh and don't forget an alignment. A 3" rear block may be cheaper than an alignment. It won't prevent the control arm from contacting the spring though.

an add a leaf would be cheaper to and help you with your towing you can get them on ebay for about $100-$150, just a thought but if dont want to its really not to hard to get take off your ball joints and sway bar, probably take you an hour or so to do the whole job.. I mean Im pretty sure many of us did our install of leveling kits with a spring compressor so I assume you definitely wont need one for uninstall.
Thanks everyone I will take your word on the spring compressor method. I will just remove the ball joint and the sway bar end link.
I can't add any more height due to the parking garage at work. I only have about 3 inches of clearance now.
I don't really like the spring compressors but I have seen horror stories about the ball joint and sway bar links but I think I can handle it.
Thanks again!

Don't get me wrong I liked the look of it better but it just didn't serve my needs at this time. I suspect when I get to the point when it does serve my needs I will install a nice lift kit with better suspension components all around and find a new place to park.
I honestly can't stand when components of a system are not functioning like they were designed. The control arm rubbing the spring was an indicator to me that the suspension was reaching stress points more than I like. This is my transportation to and from work and without work I can't pay for this or any other toys the wife and kids want.
On a side note, I did have to man-handle the coil over to get it dislodged on removal. Probably be easier with the sway bar disconnected.
