upper control arm replacement

So i was at the tire shop today getting new rubber and alignment and they came back at me with a $425 for replacing 1 upper control arm and idler arm parts and labor I dont think so......My question is, before i break the nut off the ball joint, i know its under pressure....so should i jack the wheel off the ground to release the spring tension or should i jack it up underneath the lower control arm to tension the spring to take off the ball joint nut? 2001 4x2 f150 5.4 scab.......

the thing won't come flying out if you just take the nut off.

get the tires off the ground, pull the castle nut and then hit up on the upper control arm. everything comes apart safely.

they didn't say anything about the lower ball joints?

uppers are really easy, just need to do an alignment after all is said and done. Idler arm is pretty easy if you get the puller and the large socket needed.
